So, What can Change in your Business, or What can you change in your Business?
1. Mission, Vision, & Strategy: Owners and Businesses should continually ask themselves, “What is our business and what should it be?” Am I a Tailor or a Fashion designer? Am I a photographer or just a dude with a camera. Am I a Makeup artist and still be in business in 5 years time.
Answers to these questions can lead to changes in the organization’s mission (the purpose of its business), its vision for the future (what the organization should look like), and its competitive strategy.
2.Technology: Businesses can change their technology (for example the way you produce whatever you sell) in order to increase efficiency and lower costs. For instance as a photographer, we all now majorly sell digital products, leveraging on technology.
3. Human-Behavioral Changes: Training can be provided to you as owners, managers, and employees to provide new knowledge and skills, or people can be replaced or downsized. As a result of the recent pandemic, many organizations are already thinking of downsizing which will create massive unemployment that will eventually impact the economy.
You also need to keep learning, adapt and evolve so you are not stale as this can easily throw you out of business. You must be open-minded and learn, and keep learning.
4. Task-Job Design: The way work is performed in our businesses can be changed with new procedures and methods for performing work. If your business, for instance, involves the training of people, you should evolve with online classes, Podcasts, vlogs. You should redesign your Pre-production, Production and Post-production with new procedures and methods.
6. Organizational Culture: I believe we all know what this is. In other words, it is called “This is how I run my business, or this is how we do things here”. You must attempt to change your business culture, including management and leadership styles, values and beliefs. Of all the things your business can change, this is by far the most difficult to undertake.
I would have mentioned Organizational culture has the last one, but many of us here are probably SMEs and we may have little to no Organisational structure. But if we do have it is also important to work on the structure. Your business can change the way it is structured in order to be more responsive to your external environment.
These are some of the elements that your business can change. It is important to note that changes in one of these elements will usually have an impact on another element. As an example, changing technology may require changes in the human-behavioral area (new knowledge and skills on how to use the technology).
